THINGS TO KNOW:

Our primary concerns are the safety of our skaters and looking after our winery. To that end, we have to have a few safety rules.

  • Skaters only.
  • Helmets are recommended.
  • Hot drinks from the winery are allowed.

Not allowed:

  • Hockey
  • Strollers or wheelchairs
  • Toboggans
  • Pets (although pets are allowed at the winery. Just not on the ice trail).
  • No walking on the ice trail (unless you are a ninja and we only know one of those).

Some other important details:

  • We do NOT have skate rentals. BRING YOUR OWN SKATES, please.
  • MINORS – must be accompanied at the winery by an adult (the adult does NOT have to skate though).
  • Dress for the weather!

We push boundaries

You've got questions...

Where is the ice skate trail located?

We are located at 1445 Potter Settlement Road in Tweed. Drive through the gates, make a right up the hill and follow the road. You will come around in a loop and see the winery and parking areas across from the vineyard.

Where is the check for my tickets?

Please check in inside the winery at the ground level at the tastings bar.

Where is the ice skate trail?

It starts at the bus shelter. The rink is straight ahead from there. To the right is the path along the vineyard into the forest.

Do you rent skates?

No, sorry, we do not. You will have to bring your own.

Do you have a heated shelter to put on skates?

No, we have benches next to the ice where you put on your skates. You can place footwear underneath the benches while you skate. We have two glass shelters with benches that block ou the wind and allow you to get warm with sunshine through the glass.

What rules should we know about before showing up?

Three key things:

  1. Do not enter the winery or bathrooms with your ice skates on. We do not have rubber mats and if you do, you will ruin our floors.
  2. Please no food, drink, cigarette butts or garbage on the ice during your skate. We want the ice to be pristine, clean and SAFE! We want everyone to have a great experience.
  3. The winery is for wine tastings only, or to purchase hot chocalate or mulled wine, only. We are SmartServe certified. You must be 19+ to order alcohol.
Do we have to pay for parking?

No, parking is free! Just follow the signs when you arrive.

Can we come in for a wine tasting or a drink after our skate and perhaps purchase bottles of wine?

Yes, of course! Come in (without your skates on) and we will be happy to serve you!

Can I drop my kids off for a skate at the winery and leave them unattended?

No, children under the age of 16 must be attended by a parent or guardian the whole time.

Is there music on the ice skate trail?

No. Like other skate trails, we don’t play music. Everyone has different musical tastes. For example, playing classical music may  annoy rock or country music fans. We want everyone to have a great experience. You are welcome to bring your ear buds and listen to your own music if you wish!

Can I wander off the ice skate trail and rink?

No, we wouldn’t recommend it. The snow is deep and you would likely ruin your skates. And there are other potential hazards and issues we want to avoid.

Is the skate trail as smooth as our local hockey skating arena?

That depends. It’s smooth enough to ice skate, but may be rougher in some areas due to Mother Nature, changing weather and things beyond our control. Our skate trail isn’t a closed hockey skate arena that is temperature regulated and in controlled setting. You’re outside. That said, we maintain the ice skate trail daily with our ice making equipment to make it as smooth as possible – to give you the best skating experience we can. Think Rideau Canal surface conditions when you think of our skate trail.

Can I bring my pet?

No, sorry. Pets are not allowed on the ice. This could cause safety issues and other potential problems.

Can I bring my baby in a stroller or baby carriage on to the ice?

No, we do not want any accidents, especially with small children. Safety is a primary concern.

We braved the cold weather and went to try the new skate trail at Potter Settlement Winery and had such a lovely family outing. The trail is beautiful and easy to enjoy together. We finished the evening with mulled wine for the adults and hot chocolate for the kids, which was a perfect touch. Sandor was very welcoming and took time to chat!

We went to the winery to try out the new skate trail, and had a wonderful time. The trail itself was beautiful, especially after dark under the lights. Capping the night off with mulled wine and hot chocolate was a nice touch. We enjoyed the winery so much we stayed until closing. The wines are world class!

We braved the cold last night and were the first customers for the night skating at Potter Settlement Winery! It was an incredible experience through the forest and winery with the lights and enjoying nature. We warmed up inside with mulled wine and a lovely wine tasting The work that it took to create this is admirable. Grateful for local business owners to create such a wonderful experience for us to enjoy! Highly recommended ***** We will be back again soon!

Sent my mother the link to the Northern Lights skating trail at the Potter Settlement Winery. She shared it with some of her university friends that she keeps in touch with... one of them knows a group who recently went and just skated at Northern Lights. And apparently they have also skated the Rideau Canal, and they found the Northern Lights Skate Trail to be better and more enjoyable!
