Canadian wineries sell to the U.S. easier than to people here in Canada. We think this is not good for you and not good for Canada.
A BC winery can legally ship a bottle to Seattle but cannot legally send that same bottle to someone in Toronto. Similarly, our winery here in Ontario cannot legally ship wine to B.C.!
Canada’s internal trade laws predate smartphones and Netflix, and winemakers can now sell faster and easier to foreigners than to their own neighbours two provinces over.
In Canada we only drink 12% Canadian wine. In France, Italy and Spain, they drink 70%+ of their own wines. Where is the “Elbow’s Up” strategy when it comes to Canadian wines!
This is what prompted Lightning Rock Winery owner Ron Kubek to launch a national petition, backing MP Dan Albas’s Bill C-262. As Ron puts it: “Canadians should be able to buy Canadian.”
On March 9th, Dan tabled Bill C-262, which would amend the Canada Post Corporation Act to allow Canadian wineries, craft breweries, and distilleries to ship directly to consumers across provincial lines.
Here in Canada our per litre wine taxes are higher than fuel taxes!
Canadians want to support small producers across the country and explore the incredible range of regional flavours, but right now we’re blocked or facing serious barriers to do it.
The petition takes 15 seconds to sign and will help to have Bill C-262 passed. Please show your support for this!
You will be supporting small family farms, some of which won’t survive without broader access to Canadian customers.
Provinces are working toward a May 2026 deadline to establish a national direct-to-consumer framework, but they need your voice now.
You can find the petition here.
